Meet the Author: Dav Pilkey
Dav Pilkey was born in Cleveland, Ohio to Barbara and David Pilkey. He has one older sister. Dav's story as a cartoonist and author begins in elementary school where he frequently spent the day in the hallway due to his disruptive behavior. His high school principal said to Dav, "[He] said to me, 'I know you think you're special because you can draw, but let me tell you something: Artists are a dime a dozen. You will never make a living as an artist!" Dav took those words to heart and never forgot them. He has since proven this wrong as he is now an award winning author/illustrator of many wonderful books for children. Dav attended Kent State University where one of his professors noticed his talent and encouraged him to enter a writing contest, which he won and later published the book World War Won. Of course, Dav is best known for his series of Captain Underpants books, which has sold over 14 million copies, started with Pilkey's second grade teacher who happened to say "underpants" in front of her class. The class burst into laughter and she continued to correct them by saying, " underwear is not funny." Thus began Dav's fascination with the subject and, as he puts it, "I discovered that underwear was a powerful thing: Not only could it make my friends laugh, but it could also make my teacher very angry!" Dav took a brief break from writing to attend to his serious ill father, but did return when he made a deal with Scholastic for more books. Currently, Dav lives in Washington state with his wife Sayuri, whom he met and married in 2005. His newest book, Cat Kid Comic Club, will be available on April 12, 2022.
